Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I'd like some critiques on these, so here's where I'm posting. I am planning on entering a picture in the North Carolina Our State Magazine photo contest. (http://www.ourstate.com/best/reader_photo_contest.asp) You can enter one photo per category. I've put my options below...I need help deciding! The category for these pictures is people. There is also an animal category. Think I could get away with submitting the last photo into the animal category? Would love to know which you would pick for submission and how you'd improve it. Thanks!

Of the people one, that first one is a gem. The red contrasts beautifully with the blue, plus red is a power colour. The lighting is soft, the focus is pretty well done, and I'm a fan of the composition because she has a whole frame to run through.
The other two are strong in their own ways, but not like that first one.
I like the last one, but I think animal as the category would really be pushing the limits. For me, the focus is still on that little boy being enraptured by the big fish.

One and three are great. However, a child running on the beach is soooooooo overdone, so I would pick number three. What a story that image tells!
I say 'no' to putting the last one in the animal category.

Everything about the first one is technically a better image, but the 3rd one is a far better picture. If I had to pick, I would go with the 3rd.

Definitely the third. The first two are adorable, but they are so common a lot of people wouldn't exactly find much interest in them. However, the third one is so mysterious and tells an interesting story - it would definitely draw attention, and questions, which is good.
As for the fourth one being used for an animal, it's quite obvious the focus was the little boy and not the shark itself. That, and the shark's not so clear. It's practically overexposed and also not the main subject, which would then not draw attention to it.

Thanks everyone!
I figured the one with the shark couldn't stretch to be an animal submission. All of my pictures are of people!
I'll send in the third one. The contest is for amateur photographers. I get the feeling that it's more about the story and less about the technical aspects. Although, of course, a picture should be generally good. I think that third one is my best bet. Thanks for all the feedback!

Not a problem! Be sure to let us know how you do, too. Best of luck, I hope the photo takes you far!

Thanks Saknika!
Oh, I forgot to ask - any critiques for the third one before I submit it?
