This is the first lens I've gotten since purchase, so technically... it is my first one. Haha. My camera kit came with two lenses, so I got very lucky. And the other one I have is the kit lens from my film camera.

That's really awesome! I want a 35mm 1.8 prime so bad! Can I ask why you want the 1.8 version of that lens? My understanding is that it is a DX version. I have the 35mm 2.0 which is a FX lens and is simply incredible for IQ. I think it is a little more expensive than the DX model, but if you ever plan on moving to full frame, have the 2.0 version makes a lot more sense than the 1.8. I was actually going for it mostly for video purposes over anything. From what I've heard the faster the lens the better it is for video.

I don't know about the video aspects of it. I don't see myself doing any video work, but I certainly see myself going down the full frame path.

Yea I asked a professional that has done alot of work for top companies using DSLRs for video what kind of lenses he recommends and he said the faster the better, although he didn't mention whether DX or FX was better.

If you never plan on moving from the DX sensor, I would go for it. Everything I have read about the comparisons between the DX 1.8 and the FX 2.0, the FX version has better image quality and build quality, but it does come at a higher cost. $199 for the DX model and $350 for the FX.
Another selling point for me is that the FX is a D lens and not a G. When I shoot lightning I like having my lens manually set to infinity and that isn't as easy with the G lens.

Those of us that were around in the film days mostly bought their first SLR and the "kit" lens was a 50mm prime lens. It was a real upgrade to buy any sort of zoom at all. I learned how to shoot with a 50mm, and it has been a fallback lens since.

It is an interesting change, Bambers. I used a 50mm and 150mm prime exclusively for a year though, and that's why I knew I'd love mine. C:
