I have had this discussion both online and offline over the last couple weeks. The discussion is about the best way to get images off of your memory cards. I don't know if my way is best, but it has never let me down, while the way I used to do it had. This is what I do.
1. Remove the memory card from the camera. I don't attach the camera to the USB of my computer. I use a cheap card reader. Card readers are both faster, and transferring the images via the camera attached to the USB uses a lot of camera battery.
2. Import the images into LR using the memory card in the card reader.
3. After the images are safely on my computer, remove the memory card from the card reader and put it back in the camera.
4. Format the memory card in the camera with the camera's format function. This is not the same as simply deleting all the images.
The main part of all of this is that my memory cards NEVER get taken out of the camera unless I am going to remove the images from it. It then NEVER gets put back into the camera without formatting it in camera.
For those that are going to say that they haven't had a problem yet, I am happy for you, but I have developed this little workflow because I have had problems, and lost some important images in the past.

I still use my USB cord. My card reader is actually slower, and my main memory card does not fit right in the slot on my computer, since my desktop has built-in slots for CF and SD cards. I don't know what it is about my PNY CF card though, it's like it's a millimeter or two too big.
But, I also format right after I import, and have a spare battery because it does waste so much power. Can't count the number of times I've forgotten to turn my camera off. >_<;
I'll probably invest in a faster card reader eventually.

If you just use SD and CF cards, I am a huge fan of the RocketFish card reader from BestBuy. It only does those 2, but it is very fast and only costs about $30.

I only use CF, actually. Right now I don't have the $30, but if I manage to make a few print sales I'll be able to.
