I have finally got a mini tripod setup that really works for me.
For Christmas I got a GorillaPod Focus. Google it if you are not familiar, but this little thing will hold up to 11 pounds. More than enough for my D200 with battery grip and a decent sized lens, I normally carry my 18-200. The only real downside, but typical of almost all higher end tripods, it doesn't come with a head. Unlike any higher end tripods though, you can use the Focus without one, but it is something of a hassle. I ended up getting a Manfrotto 486 ballhead for it, and I have to say that it is a great combo.
This setup is not cheap compared to low end tripods, but is a lot less than higher end stuff, but does make for a great option for being able to carry a small tripod around.

That's really cool! It looks like it'd come in handy for some of those cramped scenes were you have little space to set up, and not much ability to hand-hold.

Even before I got the head, I had used to by wrapping it around hand rails and such. Each of the segmented parts of the legs have rubber to help them grip things.
