Wasn't sure if this is the right place, but how do you go about hiring models??

Personally, I use Model Mayhem. But you need to already have some photos of people to get on there, and they will look to see the quality.
Some people post on Craigslist asking for models.
My question is, can you read lips?

Yes, I can, although people would have to talk slowly and at least loudly...
I have my step-siblings working for me as practice models but I'm sure I need more than just three kids.

Yes, you would need more than three kids. And when you hire a model, you'd have to make sure ahead of time that she/he knew that you need them to speak slowly and loudly.
Good luck. Try asking around family and friends to start and branch from there.

Yeah, I have been thinking about asking my family and friends to pitch in.
I know of a place called OneModelPlace, which is probably like Model Mayhem.

Friends and family definitely work. Usually you feel the most comfortable with them and they're usually pretty eager to see the photos you've taken AND you don't have to pay them.

Nor they me, lol. I'm actually, unfortunately, kind of closed from the family but photography can definitely help me open up to them.

What I did was put out an ad saying "free 8x10 in exchange for portfolio release." You could do the same with digital images. Everyone likes something for free and you get more for your portfolio. Make sure you get a signed model release and that you keep your safety in mind.

I'm actually thinking of doing a competition thing when I've improved, where I can have people of all ages approach me on stage, kind of like American Idol. I could be a wonderful judge, lol. But then again, that could be harsh and mean.
So... a free 8x10 of them in exchange for a portfolio release does sound like a fair deal, if not great. I will try that when I've improved.
