ok so i'm looking to buy a cheap infrared lens for my Sony-A230 DSLR camera. any suggestions? and i need a price range if any are available

I assume that you mean filter instead of lens. You can pretty much use any lens, but you need something to block out the visible light. Since most of the visible light will be removed, you will end up with some long shutter speeds, but in many cases, that leads to a very nice shot.
As for filters, I have a Hoya IR R72 that has given me good results. You do need to know what diameter the lens you are going to use is, or buy a bigger filter and get step up/down rings.

it's got a diameter of 55. my next question is, will a Hoya filter work on a Sony camera

Filters work on any camera because they thread onto the lens much like a soda cap onto a bottle.

Some cameras work better than others when it comes to doing IR with a filter. All digital cameras have a glass filter over the sensor to block out IR and UV. Some of these filters are better than others, and the better that built in filter is, the longer exposures you will have to make.
