Black and white is a favorite of many photographers, and photography enthusiasts. It has a way of making time feel frozen, and beckoning forth emotions that color just sometimes cannot do. And for many photographers, it seems like an easy medium to work in.
That however, is not the case. True black and white is not as easy to achieve as desaturating the photo and calling it good. There is a skill behind seeing in tones, understanding shadows, and getting the exposure and contrast just right.
So for this contest, if you think you know what really makes a good black and white, submit your best work!
It is preferred that you take a photo specifically for this contest, but previously shot works will be accepted.
Submissions:
It’s important to note that the submittal process is changing! In the past we had an entries thread, and a discussion thread. That is no more! To submit a photo to the contest, please PM it to me (Saknika), and I will keep track of it. You may not change your entry once submitted, so make sure it’s exactly what you want.
After the deadline has passed, the photos will be put up for vote by the members. In the event of a tie, a vote off will be held between those particular images.
Staff may enter the contest.
Rules:
-The photo must be your own work
-You may submit a single image only.
-Minor photographic retouching is allowed, heavy manipulation is not. Panorama stitching is all right.
-One entry per person.
-Photo must be black and white, no tones. So no sepia, old tones, color casts, ect. Black and white only.
Deadline: January 26th 2011 at 11:59pm EST (that’s GMT -5. In California, or PST, it’d be 8:59pm, and in England it’d be 4:59am)
Prize: Soon we’ll be getting in to bigger prizes, but for now you will be featured in the Showcase for a month, and you will win 50 forum points.
