Figure I best introduce myself.
My name is Icarus, I'm approximately 18 years old. I've been dashing around the place with a camera in my hand for about two years now. At least...dashing around and actually trying for pictures, versus just photographing whatever happens to catch my interest.
I prefer critters over humans or objects. I do a lot of rabbit photography, followed by turtles, dogs, and then horses. At the moment my camera is a Fuji Finepix point-and-shoot deal. The zoom sucks, it doesn't work in low light, you have a one-in-a-million chance of getting a clear shot of something moving. It doesn't like dull colors. It doesn't like bright colors. Overall, it is the thorn in my rump but we somehow manage.
I want to get more serious camera...but for some reason I keep buying things for my critters and depleting my funds.
I would love an Olympus Camedia R-100RS for my action photography, and possibly a Nikon D70 or a Canon EOS Rebel XS for stuff that doesn't happen to be moving as fast. I'm also considering the Panasonic brand, as I most certainly couldn't afford a Leica.
In addition to photography, I carve, paint, and collect bones and skulls. I enjoy practicing Taxidermy (all animals died of natural causes), sculpting, painting, and of course, taking care of my critters.
At the moment I have approximately 14 rabbits (four expecting), three dogs (ones a foster), four horses, a pair of Pekins, and a whole bunch of chicks, two hens, and two roosters. Plus two dozen eggs in the incubator (which I hate).
As for rabbits, I have mainly Opals, which is a dilute of Agouti. I also have Chestnut and Black Steel. I have one rather unusual brown eyed white bunny, known as Ermine. I just brought home a junior Black Steel doe, a MASSIVE Blue Steel doe (10lbs), and a good sized Blue Steel buck (6lbs). Most all of my bunnies are either Vienna marked, or Vienna carriers, meaning they are able to produce Blue Eyed White rabbits.
The newest Black Steel doe is NOT a carrier, but will make for a good producer of Viennas. The 10lb doe may or may not be a carrier, and the 6lb buck displays the gene beautifully.
As for horses, I have a 10 year old Chestnut Sabino Missouri Fox Trotter gelding. His name is Loki, he's the boss and resident jealous attention hog.
Second up is four year old Red Man. He's a Minimal Flaxen Chestnut Sabino gelding. Same sire as Loki, he's in love with Baby Girl at the moment.
Baby Girl is a four year old grade Quarter Horse mare. She's a pretty buckskin color, a bit of a snot, but well broke. Rather boring to ride, she's a lesson horse.
The newest addition to the herd is Divo, a five year old Friesian x Hackney cross gelding. He's only 14hh, but he looks exactly like a miniature Friesian, save two little white bands on the hind. He's now recovering from a bad chest scrape, thanks to Loki, who decided to chase and bully him through the forest.
As far as chickens go, I have a tiny flock (three), of Lavender Orphingtons, which I'm hoping to specialize in. I also have a Banty, two Black Copper Marans, a Polish Crested, a Delaware, a Welsummer, sort of a general assortment.
My dogs come in large, medium, and small. Duke is the oldest at four years old. He's a neutered, purebred Weimaraner. He is deathly afraid of loud noises, prefers air conditioning over anything, and is a general easily excitable couch potato.
Hazel is my first dog, only a year in a half old. She's a Great Dane x Boxer cross girl, the build of a Dane with the heavy muscling of a Boxer. She's quite athletic and loves to hunt rabbit. We're planning on spaying her soon, as she can easily clear a chainlink fence and I really don't need mini-Hazel's. My 8ft outdoor kennel (for when I'm not home and can't take them) is now like Fort Knox, as she also managed to propel herself over the top of it, through it, and under the door.
Last up is Toto, a 16lb Terrier that was dumped on a friends farm. Being a sucker for small, cute little things, I took him in, gave him a bath and Frontline, and promised to find him a home. He now has a potential home, but lo and behold I've found that he has a serious food aggression. We're now working him out of that, and he'll be going to his forever home on Sunday.
I think thats about it. Looking forward to posting and enjoying the forum ;D
