I drove to California and back on Monday for work. During the drive, I listened to some photography podcasts. One of them was about HDR photography, and what can be done with a single image in Photomatix Pro. I decided to give it a try. One of the tips was to shoot in RAW, which I always do with my DSLR, but I wanted to give it a try with an image I made with my LX3, which I shoot in JPG mode. The image on the left is pretty much out of camera, I have posted this image here before. The image on the right is the results of running that JPG through Photomatix Pro. After Photomatix Pro, I combined both images in Photoshop to mask out the sky and retain the sky from the original image. I am really developing an interest in HDR, and really see it playing a bit role in my future photography.

I literally JUST saw this on Twitter too! LMAO!
For a jpeg, that converted really nicely (at least as far as I can tell). And the HDR definitely brings more life to the photo, which I'm sure you could tell as well. I really hope we do get to see more HDR from you Scott, I see great things in your future with it as well!

I didn't spend a ton of time with the masking and if I had, the transition at the mountains would be a little nicer. That really wasn't the reason behind doing it though, I wanted to see what could come out of a JPG image. I am switching the LX3 to RAW+JPG from now on. I still have the quick JPG when I need it, but a RAW file when I really want to play. As for my recent inspiration, it has all come from here www.stuckincustoms.com/
