Georgia Bee! Great logo opportunities! That was the one that stuck out to me, too! Such a nice ring to it. It's catchy and would definitely be remembered!

I like Georgia Bee too. It's cute. =D You could also consider "First Name" Shinn Photography (Is Lauren your real first name? >.> I don't want to just make the assumption), if you really want to keep your name in there. It at least makes it clear that you're not taking pictures of shins, and it's general enough that you can switch specialties easily. Georgia Bee Photography really sounds like it relates to families and children (or maybe nature), so it might be hard to move over to, say, automotive photography, if that ever sparks your interest.

Yea you can't go wrong with just using your name, but Georgia Bee does indeed have a nice ring to it.

Well, gee. It's unanimous! Goodbye Shinn Shots, Hello Georgia Bee Photography. Thanks for all the comments!
I think its very unlikely that I will go into automotive photography or the like. And, yes, Lauren is my real first name and I thought about doing Lauren Shinn Photography, but I know so many local companies that are just the first name followed by "photography" and it just seems boring to me (although it certainly works).
A friend of mine mentioned some tax issue about not having your name as part of your business name. Anybody head of anything like this?

I've never heard of anything like that unless its a state thing where you live.

It's not necessarily a tax thing because of the name. The tax issues come in if you're using your own SSID instead of an EIN. Either way works, but you have to keep super accurate records so that if you get audited, they can figure out which is photography and which is personal for your SSID.
Also, when you aren't using your name in your business title, you have to go to your local country clerk's office and file for a DBA (Doing Business As). In NY it cost me about $36 to get two copies and file. I'm not sure what it will cost where you are.

I had it wrong. Here's what my friend said:
"You have to go through some special licensing because basically since your name is no longer in the title someone doesn't know "whom" to sue if they wanted too also I belive you have to become a LLC or something along those lines, I can't remember exactly."

Nope, just need the DBA in most states. It means that you are Lauren Shinns Doing Business As Georgia Bee Photography. Name connected. It will be on file with your county clerk, and when you file for it they'll ask you what you are. In your case, you'd be a sole proprietor. No partners, not a corporation; just you.

That is why everyone does that, it works. Boring doesn't matter. At the end of the day, I think you need "photography" somewhere in the name.
