My name's Devon and I live in Central New York. It's -1 outside(prior to wind chill), and in my opinion NOT photo weather. But I still got a new camera So I'm a total amateur. Other than family gathering and cell phone pictures I've never owned a camera. I just got this Nikon CoolpixL18 whatever with a 3x optical zoom and several other numbers on the front. I don't know what anything other than the "zoom" part means. I love photography, I find the art of capturing a single frame and being able to turn it into a memory is astounding. However, as I said I'm at a lack of any experience with this. What are some good programs for photo modification? Any starter tips? I'll take anything I can get for help right now, haha.

First off welcome to the site.
Photo programs: Adobe Photoshop CS3 or CS4
Tips: Shoot, Shoot, Shoot, Shoot, Shoot. The dirty secret to photography is that you have to take alot of pictures. At any given time there are 10 awesome photos around you. Just take your camera with you everywhere and you should get some cool stuff.

Hello and welcome! If you have any problems, don't be afraid to let me know. And hey! I'm in Upstate New York! What Net said goes, although GIMP is a freeware program you can use as well. I'm sure that everyone here will be willing to help you out with your photography as well. We're a pretty good community.

Hello and welcome Devon. I am a total amature as well but with the help of this community I have improved and come to understand the finer elements of taking shots. I have still to master them lol, it's all fun and do'nt be affraid to post any shots in the critique for everyone to help you improve elements within that shot. I used to just look at what others would say about a shot and eventualy try myself remembering what my views were and then look at what others have put, comparing my views against experience to see if I am on the right track; a little confidence builder for me.

REMEMBER - It's not the camera, nor the program, that makes the photo. It's you. That's the best advice any beginner can take to heart.
And welcome to Phototique! =)
