For this community practice, we’re going to focus on Texture.
Texture can be a very important factor in a photograph, and is generally more important when you are photographing in black and white rather than in colour. This is because the black and white relies on the texture as a basic element to add to the photo, where as the colour can take away from it. For this, it is preferred but NOT required that you take the photos either in black and white, or convert your RAWs to black and white via desaturation.
You’d be surprised where you can find texture as well! Everything has a texture to it, it’s just that some are more pronounced than others. You can go for either rough or smooth textures. So long as the image looks like it has some sort of texture to it, you are golden for this community practice.
Here are the steps to making the practice work well:
1. Share with us a new, or relatively new photograph that features texture as a main part of it.
2. Share thoughts on the image posted before you, or all of the images posted before you (you’re only required to share on at least one please) so that the person above you can try to improve.
3. Take a new photo and share it with us with anything you may learn from what others give you in feedback!
This way, we can all learn and grow through these practices. You are allowed to post as many images as you’d like, so long as it’s no more than one per post, and you do not double post. Please try to learn from feedback and what others post before adding a new image. This also gives others a chance to post their first attempts as well.
This should be great as an exercise and for feedback. Have fun with it, and no pressure. No one expects perfection.
To get us started, here is one of my recent black and white flower images:
