I keep things very simple like Accerbera, since I'm mostly just a hobby photographer. Any shots I don't like get deleted before they make it to my computer. Which is one of the nice options with digital photography, the ability to preview instantly what you've just shot! Then I upload the rest to my computer, save to file, preview once more, delete any others I don't like, done.
If I have a specific use for them, I'll open Photoshop, make adjustments, save with a new name to keep original intact, done.
One last thing, I burn everything to CDs/DVDs for a back-up too. Just in case my computer should crash and the hard drive get wiped out. o.O
