PocketWizards are remote triggers for studio lights. It's kind of like taking the flash off your camera and putting it on a big light for studio portraits, and still triggering it from your camera. Official PocketWizard Website

I hadn't heard of being able to use them for external flash units, that's pretty cool. If you're a Nikon shooter, all you need for the newer flashes is a simple microphone to PC cord adapter. Canon flashes require the same, as well as a hot shoe adapter. Further, you can use PocketWizards to trigger some high-end camera bodies. I know that you can set up newer Canon 1D with this kind of rig.

I don't know that I'll ever really use PocketWizards for those kinds of things though, since I generally only use strobes in the studio. So I'm only triggering my lights.
