There is a lot going on as we come in to May! But to start, let’s review this month’s Showcase, before I reveal the other goodies in store.
This month from the community practice, we see Lisa as the photographer with the most improvement! It was a tough call between herself and Lauren MKS. Both worked hard on their imagery, but in the end it was Lisa who tried taking a second photograph, and as that’s what we really want to see—constant trying through photography for this one—she was the one that was selected for the Showcase this month. Congratulations!
Our photo of the month was another tough call! There were a lot of incredibly strong images this month shown by many talented members! However, the one photo that shined the most was Scott Wood’s SkySong. If you have not seen this photo yet, you need to go take a look! It’s an awe-inspiring piece that’s a tough act to follow for May! Congratulations Scott!
Congratulations to our contest winner, Bambers! April’s contest challenged everyone to crawl around on the ground, and see the world from a different angle. And it produced three very strong entries! In the end though, Bambers stole the show with a vibrant photo that just really captures the imagination and the spirit of the contest.
We had many wonderful Weekly Theme entries as well throughout the month! Congratulations to everyone who was selected for one of those, despite how screwy they were time-wise!
Good luck to everyone in making it into May’s Showcase! Let’s get even more creative!
Now, for the updates I mentioned.
The biggest one, as a decision by the staff team, was to remove the posting limits in Critique. That’s right, you no longer have to comment on other people’s imagery in order to post your own! When Phototique started out, I was worried that people would just post their photos, and no one would critique any—thus destroying the entire purpose of the board. However, we now have a competent staff team ready to make sure everyone gets critiques, and so we’re going to try running without the requirement!
However, it’s still strongly encouraged that you do post critiques on other imagery! It will help you grow as a photographer, and people will remember that you left them a critique, thus increasing your chances of receiving one back! After all, do unto others what you would have done unto yourself, right?
We’re also trying a new system for the contests. Rather than having them judged, the members are going to get to vote! This is a trial run for the current contest, and at the end a short feedback from everyone will be asked. This way we can determine which method is preferred and works best. That is of course, assuming all goes well this time around—but I don’t see why it wouldn’t!
Now, since the posting limit is being lifted in the Critique section, this means those tickets are useless. All tickets that were unused were cashed in for ten points a piece, which you will now see reflected in your profile. Coming up soon, there will be cool features that you can “buy” with the points you earn! So no worries, you’re still going to get some cool stuff out of making it into the Showcase! It’s just going to take on a different form.
As you can see though, the things we’re doing around here are going to require much more member involvement. That means we can’t do it without you! So please come on a couple times a week, chat with us, and be a part of a wonderful growing community! And don’t hesitate to tell your friends about it either! The bigger the community, the more we can do and offer after all!
